Most people, if they think of streetcars at all, regard them and their use as just one more of the necessary evils of life in the Big City; but to some few enthusiasts, the noble streetcar was and is a thing of beauty, and a joy, if not forever, for a good long time anyway. The Witts of the title were a particular type of streetcar, designed by Clevelander Peter Witt. As a specialist and consultant in the field, Witt became involved with the transit problems of Toronto, and his car designs remained in use in that city for more than forty years from the time of their earliest delivery in August 1921. As promised in the subtitle, this is a loving look backward to a vanished time and mode of travel, with photos galore of the streetcar's days of glory, as well as interviews with veteran motormen and conductors, and diagrams of the Witt demonstrating its unique configuration. This isn't everybody's book: it's for special interest readers and nostalgia buffs, as well as for specialized historical research; but it should also be fun for those who will admit that they can just remember the days of the good old Red Rocket.
