This attractive little book, in the form of a sketch pad, gives a very brief introduction to the life and work of Emily Carr, the social history of her time, sketching, and even about writing. As a result of trying to cover such a diversity of material in a few pages, some areas (particularly sketching), are not dealt with in sufficient detail, even for an introductory treatment. For example, the reader is invited to draw on a number of pages (there are also blank pages for this purpose at the back), but the directions should have been more instructive. Also, the continuity of the text suffers because of the variety of subject matter included. Despite these problems, the narrative is interesting and presents a number of highlights of Emily Carr's life and character in a format readily accessible to children who initially may not be sufficiently motivated to read her autobiographical works.

Sketches by several well-known artists and the co-author illustrate the text, which is further enhanced by hand lettering. Several typographical errors should, however, have been eliminated.

This book is more suitable for private purchase because of the blank spaces for drawing, but libraries may find it useful to foster an interest in the work of Emily Carr.
