The day Patrick saw the canary-coloured van painted with green and orange design, his life was changed. The three members of the Caravan Theatre Company had been travelling all over Ontario acting in plays for kids. Patrick is just what the company needed. Dad was working on the pipeline. Mom had previously deserted, and the babysitter seemed more interested in TV than Patrick. Patrick joins the company and blossoms into an aspiring actor and magician. The reader travels through various towns and cities in Ontario and shares the adventures arid theatrics with this unusual company.

The narrative is presented in an interesting manner enhanced with many phrases and verses borrowed from The Penguin Book of Canadian Folk Songs. The plot moves at a fast pace and is exciting. Humour and suspense is created with the character Madman McMann, a former actor, currently a truant officer who persistently pursues Patrick's trail. Patrick manages to outwit him with disguises and tricks.

The print is bold and well spaced with fair-sized margins. Several black-and-white illustrations by Glen Priestley enhance the plot. The artistic merit of the illustrations will be appreciated. More pictures would be welcome.

Students from grades 5 to 8 will enjoy reading the story or having it read in class. It may be enjoyed both as a novel study or recreational reading.
