Rennie. Volume 10 Number 4. 1982 November. This is a rather interesting book in several ways. It is autobiographical, but the person chiefly responsible for getting it published is George Durocher. The author had intended to publish his journal, but died before doing so. It comprises a very articulate account of what it was like to come from a long-settled part of France, during the great wave of immigration prior to World War I, to help settle northern Saskatchewan. To finish off, the author returned to visit Canada in 1957, after having returned to France to fight in World War I and to remain there. Between 1910 and 1914, he had various jobs and tried homesteading, so we get a detailed look at the daily life, the joys and frustrations, of the settlers. The first half of the book is in French, an edited version of Giscard's journals, and the second half is an English translation. Between the prose sections, there is a set of photographs, very well reproduced. The style of a journal is kept throughout, short descriptive sentences. There is no index, but the chapter headings tell the reader time and place. The book is readable, in English, from grades 7 on; in French (non-immersion), grade 10 and up. Ronald G.
