Book processing, cataloguing, and collection organization is both a science and an art. This is amply demonstrated in the Handbook for Bilingual School Resource Centres, which was developed to provide guidance for those librarians engaged in either bilingual collection development activities or wishing to understand the nature of cataloguing French materials.

The Handbook attempts to reduce the complexity of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR II); however, the rules for basic description are the same. The problem is not a change in the rules for French language materials but an understanding of the French language by the librarian or cataloguer.

Despite the need for the school librarian to become fluent in French, the Handbook suggests a number of alternatives, including purchase of preprocessed cataloguing cards from National Book Centre, Vancouver School Board, Le Centrale des Bibliotheques, Saunders Books Wholesale, or through Canadian Biblio Consultants, Ltd. It should be noted that Saunders Books Wholesale purchases its cataloguing from Canadian Biblio Consultants. The prices included in the Handbook serve only as a guide.

The Handbook includes sections on library promotion, on extensive bibliography of selection and ordering tools, sample letters, sample cataloguing cards, a translation list of useful cataloguing terms, and a section on cross-reference cards. As a guidebook, it is a must for every school librarian's shelf. The Handbook will save hours of work, and the producers of the text are to be commended for their efforts.
