Buyer's Guide represents another "everything you wanted to know about. . ." endeavour by Reader's Digest. This approach was quite successful in specialized areas such as their Mothercare Book. However, attempting to cover all aspects of consumerism in 400 pages leads to grossly superficial treatment. The eighteen main topics range from money management to feeding and clothing your family to putting a roof over their heads, furnishing and maintaining it, to recreation activities. The editors do make a valiant effort at packaging their product attractively. There are numerous (too many?) illustrations and highlighted features are given a "thematic" table of contents. There are six "focus" items— presumably these are high-use topics, but it baffles one to think that more space is given to buying jewellery or a pet than to purchasing a home! Since the Buyer's Guide is published in conjunction with the Canadian Automobile Association, it is surprising that only thirty pages are devoted to vehicles. One useful feature is a Consumer Service Directory listing the various business and government departments one could contact for advice or complaints on any topic covered in the text.

Educationally, Buyer's Guide might be used in life skills classes. Since this volume is geared to the public and home library market, school libraries would be well advised to invest the money in free or inexpensive government publications and a subscription to Consumer Reports or Canadian Consumer.
