Toronto Oxford Press came very close to producing an excellent book when they published Canada From Coast to Coast. This is the finale in a twenty-seven title series dealing with the regions of Canada. Although not stated, I feel that the intent of this book was to show how the parts fit the whole, how, despite our regional differences, we are all part of this great beautiful country, Canada. They were successful, but not without some major flaws.

The book flows, jerkily, from the East to the West with nothing but the individual picture titles to indicate to readers the province they are in. While this promotes the unity of the whole, it is annoying if they wish to look at the pictures of a particular province. The book draws on the best of the pictures from the others in the series plus some additions to fill in the gaps. The majority of the pictures are excellent, although too many of them were blurred by the printing. The pictures also portray the obvious biases of the editors. Twenty-seven per cent of the pictures deal exclusively with Ontario. Combining Ottawa and Quebec with Ontario brings the total to forty-three per cent, more than the pictures allocated for the four western provinces and territories combined.

Despite these flaws I would recommend this book for most school libraries. It does have an excellent series of portraits and would be most useful in any discussion of Canada, as much for what is excluded as for what is included.
