The Canadian Poetry Unit, one of the Canadian literature units from Scholastic, is intended to be used as a class set. The anthology* itself seems an extremely appropriate choice for such a kit. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the student guide: uninspired and uninspiring, it is barely adequate. As for the readings on the tape, their very mediocrity should challenge students and teachers to better the oral interpretations given. Perhaps the most useful resource in the package is the teaching manual. It provides a clear overview of the unit, an informative discussion of poetry and extremely detailed, sequential lesson plans that incorporate all of the poems in the anthology. Beginning teachers or those unfamiliar with the subject will find this a most welcome resource. More experienced practitioners will be able to extend the creative approaches outlined. Recommended for school, departmental, and district resource centres.
