One is fascinated by the process, and sketchbooks of painters frequently reveal more to us of process and of creative choices than a completed canvas. Shadbolt has published eighty reproductions of paintings that he created as a process for loosening up, cutting and pasting fashion illustrations into non-objective works. Although useful for him as a process, they do not merit inclusion in a book. They are, after all, only associations in a very incomplete form of photographic images that turn out to be something more after he lets his imagination and brush interpret them. These are all segments of fashion models' clothing and bodies cut and pasted in a remarkably naive way. This process would be intriguing for a high school art student to work through, and in fact most do so frequently in their programs. His gratuitous use of women's bodies here was not explored with any subtlety or insight. I would not recommend purchase. Carrie Sokoloff, Toronto, ON.
