Map My School
Map My School
Compass Rose
A map usually has a compass rose in the corner. The points on a compass rose are marked with the letters N, E, W, and S. They show you which direction is north, south, east, or west.
Map My School is part of the new “Mapping My World” series from Crabtree Publishing. Author Harriet Brundle has written all four books in the series: Map My School, Map My Planet, Map My Country and Map My Community.
Each book follows a consistent format but uses different illustrations to reflect the content focus. The opening chapters explain what a map is, how to use a map, what a map legend is, and how to use a map scale. Each book in the series then explores different aspects of a specific type of map.
Map My School focuses on school maps with chapters including Mapping My School, Floor Plans, and Who Uses a School Map? Mapping My School leads the students through a series of steps to create a floor plan of their school.
Step 1 – List important Areas
Step 2 – Create a Legend
Step 3 – Draw Your Floor Plan
Step 4 – Add the Details
Each book concludes with a mapping activity. The activity in Map My School asks the students to use the floor plan that have already created to “Give directions to a new student at your school”. This is a realistic performance task to assess the student’s understanding of the mapping skills presented in this book and others in the series.
Map My School includes a table of contents, and a simple glossary and index. Illustrations are very colorful, and the large clear font makes the text very legible for young readers.
I highly recommend Map My School for young readers learning about maps for the first time with assistance and for slightly older students exploring maps in more depth independently.
